What is Drywall Finishing (Tape & Mud)?
Drywall finishing, also known
as taping & mudding, is the process of preparing the wall & ceiling drywall
sheets to be painted, textured, or wallpapered – if so desired – or as a fire protection
measure. The first step involves filling any large gaps, embedding paper or composite
tape, and trim materials (also called corner beads) to drywall joint seams as
well as inside or outside corners. Simply put, unnecessarily visible or exposed
gaps and corners in drywall are to be hidden. Next, depending on what space is
being worked on, one or several more coats of drywall joint compound may be
required to appropriately advance to the needed finish. After this, the final
step is to sand excess drywall joint compound and leave a flat and smooth
surface. At this point, the drywall finishing process may be considered complete.
Depending on the area being
worked on, we may recommend different types of drywall or levels of finish.
Several factors are taken into consideration – including but not limited to – what
kind of structure/room is being finished, how much traffic the area is exposed
to, what kind of light exposure is planned for a room, if there is additional
sound or fire-rated protection required, or simply what kind of vision you may have
for the finished space.
It is no secret that every
step in your building process is impacted by the quality of work prior to it.
If the drywall taping & mudding are done poorly, then the painting,
texturing, & wallpapering can be affected. Do trust your drywall finishing
process with a professional trowel artist who can arrange affairs to so leave
you with as good a surface as possible ready for the next steps. This way you can
avoid lengthier than necessary labour times, or using additional material.
No doubt drywall finishing is
an art, and a clean tasteful finish is best done by a tradesperson with a keen
eye for detail and taking pride in their work. Whether it is basement repair,
new residential construction, or commercial spaces, taping and mudding is enjoyable
